Call of Duty: Black Ops is the seventh installment of the series and perhaps the best yet. The multiplayer has been tweaked and makes more sense now. The advantages of some of the nastier weapons have been balanced out somewhat. For example, the under-slung grenade launcher is thankfully not as prevalent due to its reduced power and the maps are constructed in a way that does not favor long distance sniping as much as previous games did.
Yet still can be heard the same anguished cry from friends and strangers alike, the word “camper” ringing through earpieces the world over.
They boldly ran into a room only to come face to face with the patient barrel of a shotgun. The owner of which is perched up on a filing cabinet, already in the room and looking like they have been sat there since the dawn of time. This is camping. So what can you do about it?
Basic Room Clearing Instructions
Get yourself up against the wall, near the doorway. In this example, the exterior wall is on your right side and the doorway in front of you.
To disable both the initial reaction to the assault and the enemy claymores throw a flash bang into the room. Have a teammate watching the entrance over your shoulder as someone will no doubt try and zap you during the few seconds it takes your character to fish around on his belt for a flash bang.
Aim the crosshair through the doorway at the surface of an interior wall and press LB to throw the flash bang, bouncing it into the middle of the target room where it will affect the most enemies when it detonates.
Tuck back into the wall and wait for the bang.
As soon as you hear the bang, move quickly into the target room by aiming your crosshair at chest height and circling round the doorway clockwise. As you swing your arc round, side-step through the doorway into the target room.
Move along the back wall into the right-hand corner. Your partner should follow you immediately into the room and take the left side to spread your angle of fire.
When you hit the wall on the far right side begin moving forward through the room, taking out your hapless victims. You can spot enemies that have been affected by the flash as they will have their arm in front of their face, shielding their eyes as they dodder around blindly.
Cover the entire room with your partner, check it from corner to corner to make sure no enemies are tucked away in hiding.
Once the room is clear, booby-trap the entrances with claymores. Make sure you place the claymore so that the red laser beams that mark out the blast trajectory do not protrude over the top of the stairs or through the doorway that you are defending as this will give away its position and spoil Christmas.
Now, you can leave the area with the smug satisfaction of knowing there’s a nasty surprise waiting for anyone who returns to that same camping spot.
Handy Hints
While the dazed bad guys may be easy pickings, if it’s a large room enemies towards the back may have suffered little or no effect from the distraction device and will therefore pose more of a threat. You may need to look for the muzzle flash from these positions and return fire as soon as you breach the doorway.
If the opportunity presents itself, a knife kill will serve you better. Enemies in adjoining rooms will not be alerted to your presence, you won’t show up as a red dot on the radar and you can save vital ammo in the clip of your primary weapon.
The important thing is to keep moving. Do not freeze under the enemy’s fire. Do not block the doorway or your team will stack up and get shot.
If you run out of bullets before the room is clear do not press reload. Instead switch to your pistol and continue taking out your targets. It’s always quicker to press Y and switch to your pistol than it is to reload.
