When you first start playing online you will only have 3 kill streaks unlocked. Only three can be in use at one time so choose carefully. Killstreak rewards only come into effect once you have killed a certain number of enemies in a row without dying. Unless you are confident that you can easily achieve a high kill streak it is advisable to choose the lower rewards or plan out a killstreak strategy (more on that below).

For players finding it hard to achieve high killstreaks online, choose Care Package which you will obtain after 5 kills. When you activate the reward a package will be dropped to the location of your choice. The package will contain ammo or another killstreak reward. This can be a great opportunity to score some more kills - if you're lucky you may just rip some sh*t up with some Attack Dogs.

Hardline is smart for those who are killstreak challenged. It requires a measly 1 kill lower, but that is still helpful in many situations. For example, a Spy Plane, which can detect enemies on the map which can help continue your killstreak, requires only 2 kills! Even for the newest players, 2 kills in a row should not be difficult. And once the Spy Plane is in the air, you'll have a better chance of racking some more kills.

The theory of 'stepping stones' is that kills made from killstreak rewards add to your total killstreak count and you use one killstreak reward to get kills so you can get an even better reward. However, in Black Ops, kills made from killstreak rewards to not count toward your total killstreak count.

So no stepping stones? So what can you do? No sweat; it's almost the same thing, except you'll have to do some extra work. Now I know you are crying now but stop being pathetically weak. Now - first you'll need something to help you out to get more killstreak rewards. For this, Spy Plane is great (notice how commonly Spy Planes are used in Black Ops). In Black Ops, one should always have Care Package equipped. Because the stepping stone strategy can't be used, you might as well have a chance at obtaining an easy killstreak reward. Now, for your last killstreak, there are many possibilities. Choose one that kills.Since it is your last killstreak reward, you'll want something that kills. So Attack Helicopter, Chopper Gunner, and Attack Dogs are all good choices.

Killstreak Setups to Try:
For the pathetically weak (have on Hardline) - Spy Plane, Counter-Spy Plane, Napalm Strike
For the newbie - Spy Plane, Care Package, Attack Helicopter or Sentry Gun
For the overconfident newbie - Care Package, Attack Helicopter, Attack Dogs
For the experienced - Care Package, Attack Helicopter, Chopper Gunner or Gunship
For the epic - Blackbird, Chopper Gunner, Attack Dogs or Gunship

Killstreak Rewards
3 kills - Spy Plane
Call in a spy plane that scans map for enemies and lasts for 60 seconds. Doesn't work on enemies with the Ghost perk active. Can be shot down with a full clip.

3 kills - RC-XD
Control an RC-XD R/C car. Explodes when reaches the time limit; capable of causing epic mutli-kills. Can be destroyed by the enemy. Very hard to control.

4 kills - Counter-Spy Plane
Call in a plane that jams enemy radar. It has less health than a regular spy plane and can be shot down with less than a full clip.

4 kills - SAM Turret
Airdrop a placeable SAM turret that destroys enemy aircraft. Can be destroyed with a burst of gunfire or a single melee hit. Lasts for 60 seconds - use it wisely.

5 kills - Care Package
Airdrop from a Chinook a crate that contains a random killstreak reward or ammo.

5 kills - Napalm Strike
Call in a controllable direction airstrike from a team of F4 Phantom fighter jets that leave the ground burning with flames. Overkill flamethrower.

6 kills - Sentry Gun
Airdrop a placeable Sentry Gun that can be moved anywhere on the map and lasts for 60 seconds. The gun has a 180 degree firing radius. It can be destroyed with a burst of gunfire or a single melee hit.

6 kills - Mortar Team
Mark 3 locations that will be bombed by mortar. Bang, bang, your dead. Try to wait until there's a Spy Plane in the air.

7 kills -Attack Helicopter
Call in an Cobra/Hind that will patrol a specific area. It is the same 7-killstreak chopper found in the Modern Warfare series. Carries 1 flare and can be shot down with around 2 assault rifle clips.

7 kills - Valkyrie Rockets
Airdrop controllable Valkyrie Rockets that are fired from a launcher. They're like ground-based Predator missiles. You are completely vulnerable while firing it.

8 kills - Blackbird
Call in a SR-71 Blackbird that patrols the map. The Blackbird reveals enemies' locations and directions. Cannot be shot down. Does not work with enemies with Ghost Pro active.

8 kills - Rolling Thunder
Call in a carpet bombing in a line from a B-52 bomber. Same effect as the Stealth Bomber from MW2. Extremely difficult to shoot down - near impossible unless you have a Valkyrie. The B-52 cannot be locked on to.

9 kills - Chopper Gunner
Control the Death Machine minigun from a Huey helicopter that circles the map. You fire from an open side-door similar to the way shoot from a Blackhawk in Modern Warfare 2 (in the Spec Ops episode "Big Brother.") The Huey carries 2 flares and is difficult to shoot down.

11 kills -Attack Dogs
Release a horde of epic German Shepherds that run around the map, murdering all enemies. Some losers hide on buildings and objects so the dogs can't get them. Dogs kill in one bite and are extremely fast. They can be shot and killed.

11 kills - Gunship
Call in a full-controllable Apache gunship that you drive around the map. Fires missiles and rains down chain-gun fire. Carries 2 flares and is hard to shoot down. Epic.
